Summary
This piece of legislation will revamp the special license plate system in New Mexico. Instead of the state offering many different special license plates, it will offer one generic special license plate, for a fee, and also sell “special registration decals” with different purposes and designs that can be purchased and affixed to the license plate. The decals will be good for only one-year at a time. The bill authorizes the issuance of a number of special decals, including one for “share with wildlife,” and repeals current sections of law that create individual special license plates. A portion of the proceeds of the share with wildlife decal will be remitted to the wildlife program of the Game Protection Fund.
A possible benefit of the bill might develop if the decal system raises more money for wildlife than the current special license plate. Conversely, revenues might also decrease.
This bill is a companion bill to Senate Bill 496.
Outcome: HB 488 died in the House Appropriations and Finance Committee.
