Summary

The bill adds a new section to the State’s water law. The bill requires someone who puts water from a fully diverted stream to beneficial use and who can recycle it to treat the water and return it to the stream as “treated effluent and recycled water” during the months of May through September to avoid disruption of or harm to acequias, livestock, domestic springs, sumps, natural riparian habitat and native wildlife.

A benefit of this might be that it could be a positive step towards increasing the flow in New Mexico’s streams.

Outcome: HB 576 died in the House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee.
