Summary
This bill prohibits former statewide elected officials, former public regulation commissioners, former legislators and former cabinet secretaries from accepting compensation as lobbyists for a period of two years after their service. And it prohibits employers of lobbyists from compensating any of those individuals as lobbyists for a period of two years after service. Violation of either prohibition is a misdemeanor.
The bill applies to individuals who hold office on or after July 1, 2015.
A possible benefit of this bill might be that those office holders will be less likely to be influenced in the course of performing their official duties by the prospect of future employment as lobbyists. A possible concern might be that some such officials will give up their official positions prior to July 1, 2015 in favor of a lobbying opportunity and may in the meantime be subject to undue influence by their potential employers.
