Summary
This bill prohibits coyote killing contests, which are defined as organized or sponsored competitions with the objective of killing coyotes for prizes or entertainment.
A person who organizes, causes, sponsors, arranges or holds a coyote-killing contest, or who participates in a coyote-killing contest, is guilty of a petty misdemeanor. The bill defines the elements of the prohibited activities.
The legislature finds that this bill “would benefit the state to retain its tradition of nonfrivolous hunting …
in concert with long-standing conservation guidelines for hunters and anglers.”
A potential benefit of the bill is that the ban might lead to a reduction in pressure on coyotes who play a role in ecosystems.
