Summary

This measure would appropriate $50,000 to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) to conduct a public education program on the potential dangers of exposure to mercury from compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) used in the home.

One concern with this bill might be that it focuses only on the potential dangers and not potential positive aspects of CFL bulbs, such as saving energy. Another possible concern could be that it does not include the potential pros and cons of other types of light bulbs.

On February 4, 2013, HENRC amended the bill to switch the recipient of the appropriation from NMED to the NM Department of Health. A concern with this amendment might be that the Department of Health will not have the expertise to present the benefits of CFLs from an energy-perspective, as would the NMED.
