Summary

This bill would enact The Interstate Compact for the Prevention and Control of Forest Fires into law and make New Mexico a member state of the compact. The compact includes provisions regarding interstate cooperation and assistance with respect to preventing and fighting forest fires in the Great Plains region, including addressing liability and costs among cooperating states. Member states appear to include South and North Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado.

This measure may benefit New Mexico by augmenting its firefighting abilities. It may make it easier to receive assistance from or give assistance to member states since the compact provides guidance on liability and costs. A possible question regarding the bill is whether the interstate aid might not be taking place already without the compact and, if so, is the compact really necessary?
