Summary

This bill would enact the Interstate Compact for the Prevention and Control of Forest Fires into law and make New Mexico a member state of the compact. The purpose of the compact is to promote effective prevention and control of forest fires in the Great Plains region, by the maintenance of adequate forest
firefighting services by the member states, and providing for reciprocal aid in fighting forest fires. Current member states include North and South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado.

This measure may benefit New Mexico by augmenting its firefighting abilities and by making it easier to receive assistance from or give assistance to other member states. A possible question regarding the bill is whether the interstate aid might not be taking place already without the compact and, if so, is the compact really necessary?
