Summary

This bill enacts the Cultural Affairs and Tourism Department Act, combining the two departments into one by incorporating Tourism into the Cultural Affairs Department statutes. Administratively attached to the new department are the New Mexico State Fair, the State Racing Commission, a new Tourism Commission and a new Fort Stanton Development Commission. The act also creates two new funds in the State Treasury: the Tourism Enterprise Fund and the Fort Stanton Development Fund.

A possible benefit of the act may be that Cultural Affairs will have access to more resources in a larger department. A possible concern might be that Cultural Affairs may get less attention and have less influence in the combined department, especially if projects related to cultural affairs are not moneymakers.
