Summary

The Colonias Infrastructure Act specifies, among other requirements, that a colonia is a rural community with a population of 25,000 or less located within 150 miles of the United States-Mexico border. This bill would expand the definition of “colonia” to include a community within 50 miles of a municipality with a population over 250,000.

A possible benefit of this bill might be infrastructure improvements for the qualifying colonia, including potable water supply; adequate sewage systems; or safe and sanitary housing.
